The Modern Diorama
The original diorama, designed by Louis Daguerre in 1820, was a scene reproduced on cloth transparencies with various lights shining through the cloths to produce changes in effect, intended for viewing at a distance through an aperture in a theatre-like setting.

Today, dioramas are seen in museums (large) and hobby shops (small): a partly three-dimensional miniature or life-size scene in which figures, stuffed wildlife, or other objects – such as rocks or plants — are arranged in a naturalistic setting against a painted background.
